Treatment Spotlight

A common treatment at the clinic is the use of nutritional supplementation. Manufacturers of professional natural health products continue to develop highly effective products that are proving equal or superior to drug-based pharmaceuticals. A new example of this is VFM-100.
VFM-100 serves to help reduce abdominal fat, reduce total body weight/ waist circumference and also helps control blood glucose levels. Composed of the flavonoid glabridin, VFM-100 targets the fat around our organs called visceral fat. VFM-100 works by down regulating the body's fat forming enzymes and increasing the activity of fat-burning enzymes in the liver. This product is clinically proven to reduce metabolic risk factors with healthy fat metabolism and works best when combined with a healthy diet and exercise.
Indications for use include:
- improving body composition;
- managing Metabolic Syndrome or Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome;
- managing and reversing Type II diabetes in combination with a healthy lifestyle program, such as the clinic's Natural Edge program;
- managing or preventing cardiovascular disease in combination with a healthy lifestyle program.
Fat that is stored in the abdominal area (visceral fat) increases the risk of several serious diseases. Among these diseases are Type II Diabetes and cardiovascular disease. One of the major issues concerning visceral fat is that it tends to release more inflammatory molecules into the body on a consistent basis resulting in an inability for the body to maintain a healthy homeostatic level. Another major result of visceral fat accumulation is that when the liver metabolizes fat, it releases "bad" cholesterol or LDL into the body. This cholesterol then builds up in the arteries in the form of plaque leading to cardiovascular disease. It is also know that visceral fat releases chemicals that can influence the action of insulin potentially leading to diabetes.

Health Bulletin

This summer may be the best time of year to start incorporating more healthy living into your lifestyle. It's great to just take a walk, ripe fruit and vegetables are coming into season, and you likely have an increased commitment to setting aside some time to relax. Healthy living is addictive, because you always remember how great you felt and the behaviours that made you feel that way. Here's the shortest list that can be made to successfully feel great all summer and maintain or kick-off your commitment to managing your health.
- Eat your veggies. With today's increased emphasis on healthy living it is easy to find recipes that you will love that incorporate a wide variety of vegetables. You will notice that your eating behaviours automatically change once you commit to eating more vegetables.
- Go for a walk. Calgary is a wonderful City to walk in. Choose your neighbourhood, an expansive park or a short trip to the mountains. This is a great time of year to get outside and appreciate your surroundings and feel fit.
- Consume less alcohol. Try to never consume more than 2 drinks in a single day. This leaves you more in charge of your consumption. If you are drinking more than 5 drinks in a week, then take stock of the actual amount and find ways to reduce your consumption.
Patient Success Story
A male in his fifty's presented to the clinic with central obesity, high blood pressure, high blood glucose levels, hypertension, and is pre-diabetic. He has struggled with neuropathy (pain and numbness in the feet), fatigue, and a weight issue for years and has reported a lack energy to do everyday work or increase his physical activity. It was discovered that he has issues with his eating habits. He routinely ate the “sumo wrestler diet”—eating 2 to 3 large meals infrequently. The patient usually missed breakfast and ate a large and unhealthy lunch and dinner with few or any snacks during the day. This caused his blood sugar levels to rise and fall drastically throughout the day.
After an assessment that included blood work and a bioimpedence analysis readout, it was decided to have this patient follow a balanced, calorie restricted diet based on his basal metabolic rate (calories burned at rest in a day). We also included a medical food and supplements to help level out the patient's blood sugar levels, vitamin B12 injections, in addition to a routine physical activity and relaxation plan. The patient recorded his new eating habits daily to help establish his new program and met with me weekly to ensure things were continuing without any issues. We tracked his progress in fat loss, lean muscle gain, and water levels with the bioimpedence analysis machine.
Within 12 weeks this patient was able to decrease his body fat percentage by 5.3%, increase his lean body mass by 5.1%, obtain healthy cellular water levels, lower his blood pressure to within the normal range, decrease his blood sugar levels, and healthfully lost 23lbs.
This patient now reports that he is still on track with his new lifestyle, continues to have increased energy, and rarely struggles with his neuropathy pain. He is no longer on the track to type II diabetes and is on the right path to a longer healthier life.
