Health Bulletin

In February, Dr. Nardella and I attended a seminar, Integrative Oncology: Concepts & Strategies for Clinical Practice, presented by Dr. Lise Alschuler. Dr. Alschuler was the director of the naturopathic medicine department and naturopathic oncology residency program at Cancer Treatment Centers of America. We gained valuable insights into current and emerging cancer therapies. Two important notes from the conference that immediately benefit all patients is the use of melatonin and green tea in the prevention and fight against cancer.

Melatonin
Melatonin is a hormone released from the brain, and it plays a large role in the sleep-wake cycle. Its production is significantly influenced by individual sleeping habits. Other important influences include light, day length and electromagnetic energy.

Recent evidence has found that melatonin plays a pivotal role in preventing and fighting cancer. It acts as a strong anti-oxidant and immunomodulator. This means that it has a dramatic effect on the health of the immune system. There is good evidence that melatonin significantly improved the survival time and quality of life in patients with many different cancers. It also decreased the toxicity and general side effects of chemotherapeutic agents. Researchers found that women with low melatonin levels had the highest incidence of estrogen receptors which correlated to a type of breast cancer.

Melatonin supplementation is emerging as an excellent cancer prevention treatment. At certain levels melatonin can help slow the progression of cancers. It is also very important for patients seeking to establish healthy sleep patterns and, naturally, produce more melatonin.

Talk to us about melatonin and its uses and dosages that would be right for you. Testing a patient's melatonin level is best done using a saliva specimen.

Green Tea
Green tea leaf is rich in antioxidants called polyphenols which may constitute up to 30% of the dry leaf. So, when you drink a cup of tea, it becomes a solution of tea polyphenols. In fresh, unfermented tea leaves, polyphenols are called catechins. Green tea will provide protection against free radical damage in your body. Free radicals are highly reactive molecules and fragments of molecules that can cause damage to your body at the cellular level. The catechins target and repair DNA damage caused by certain free radicals. Lab studies have shown that green tea can inhibit cancer growth by scavenging free radicals, by decreasing the amount and size of tumors and by inhibiting the growth of tumors. A research study looking into the benefits of green tea and cancer that involved giving 32 men three 200mg tablets of green tea catechins for one year and giving 30 men a placebo found the following:

  • Only one man in the group who received green tea catechins developed prostate cancer – a rate of only 3 percent.
  • Nine out of the remaining 30 who received a placebo developed the disease – this is the expected rate of 30 percent.

Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) has been shown to be the most powerful catechin found in tea. In fact, one study showed that EGCG is 50-100 times more potent than the antioxidant in vitamin C. Just three cups of tea a day can reduce the risk of breast cancer in some young women.

Every day we learn more about active disease prevention and health promotion practices that benefit patients. Everyone should be doing something simple every day to create a healthy life for themselves.
