Health Bulletin
It's heart month, so remember to take care of your ticker. Everything feels better when your heart is in it. The Clinic recommends that everyone take steps to prevent cardiovascular disease. This may seem like common sense, but with 410,000 deaths from cardiovascular disease compared to 290,000 deaths from cancer in the U.S. in 2005 it appears that people need to do more. Men have a 49% lifetime risk of developing coronary heart disease after age 40. Cardiovascular disease is largely preventable.
Basic prevention of cardiovascular disease:
- Moderate exercise
- Balance diet
- Healthy weight
- Stress management
Moderate prevention of cardiovascular disease:
- Regular mild detoxification
- Supplementation including:
- Essential Fatty Acids
- Multi-vitamin
- Antioxidants
- Regularly check blood cholesterol levels
- Regular blood pressure monitoring
- Participation in a managed healthy lifestyle program. (The Clinic's program is called Natural Edge™)
Expert prevention of cardiovascular disease:
- Blood tests:
- Advanced cholesterol testing
- Testing for key nutritional deficiencies–e.g. CoQ10, Vitamin D
- Testing for levels of free radical damage (oxidative stress)
- Inflammatory markers (e.g. c-reactive protein highly sensitive, fibrinogen)
- Hormone levels and ratios
- Genetic testing for predisposition and determining best management strategies
- Diagnostic Imaging (If indicated by other findings)
- E.g. Calcium Artery Score
- Targeted supplementation depending upon diagnostic results
- Blood pressure control and reduction through natural therapeutics and/or pharmaceuticals
- Counselling in stress management
- Chelation therapy
- This is primarily used as a restorative treatment. That is, after the diagnosis of cardiovascular disease. However, its best application is in prevention for those patients identified as being at risk. Treatments achieve two main objectives:
- Decreases blood vessel inflammation; and
- Decreases calcification of the arteries (blockages)
- This leads to increased blood flow throughout the body and helps oxygenate tissue. This is why patients feel better and live healthier lives.
The Nardella Clinic recommends that everyone participate in a moderate to advanced level of prevention. Below are some statistics on the prevalence of cardiovascular disease from the American Heart Association.
