A Comment on H1N1

We are fielding a lot of questions regarding H1N1 or the swine flu. Our recommendations regarding the vaccine are that the patient makes the decision. If the vaccine is important in managing your health, then you may decide to get it. If your health is robust and you are proactive in looking after yourself, the vaccine is much less important you. However, you may still decide to get vaccinated to prevent the spread of illness to less healthy people that you may be in contact with. Many people are avoiding the vaccine due to unwanted exposure to additives in the vaccine. This is a legitimate decision for those who know that they are managing there health well or have had a history of reactions to vaccines.

Our bottom line is that individuals are responsible for promoting their highest and best states of health. There are many things that people should do regularly that only occur when they are sick. If you want to have your best chance of staying healthy through the flu season, then do these things:

1. Sleep
Make time for eight hours sleep. If you have difficulty getting a proper amount of sleep, then analyze your behaviours and environment for negative influences on your ability to sleep.

2. Healthy Diet
Everyone should know what this individually means to them. Learn the correct amount of calories for your stage of life and activity levels. Foods should be of a high quality with only a very small amount of caloric intake coming from prepared and processed foods.

3. Supplementation
Yes, antioxidants are important. This is far from the whole solution. Providing specific nutritional intervention regarding the aspects of your health that may impede optimal immune system functioning are most important.

4. Mild Exercise
No overdoing it—do not put your body in recovery mode on a regular basis. You may not acknowledge mild flu symptoms when they start to develop. Engaging in an intense work out is just the thing that could compromise your immune system enough to lose the battle against developing a more prolonged and severe illness. If you are feeling slightly “under-the-weather”, then it is time to rest.
